As most of you know, we are avid geocachers (geocaching.com). Our geocaching name is “TheDips”, named after our Diplomat motorhome. Geocaching has taken us to some of the most interesting places and sights in the cities and countries we have visited. That is part of what draws us to this activity. We found that there are plenty of geocaches in the ports we are visiting in Japan, many of which are located at/near interesting historic and religious sights.

We also wanted to meet some local geocachers along the way, so we posted a special geocache called an “Event Cache”. An event has a specific time, date, and location that other geocachers (also known as cachers) can see at geocaching.com. Cachers can post a comment that they will attend the event, so we will know if there is any interest.

We were scheduled to visit Nagasaki on March 30^th and had posted an event cache for that afternoon in a park near the cruise ship pier. Nine days later, we were notified that the cruise line had removed Nagasaki from the itinerary. Unfortunately, that meant cancelling our event. A few days later, we received a message from a Japanese cacher.  Here is what he said, we shortened and paraphrased his message:

“Hi, The Dips-san. I’m hikohohodemi, a Japanese geocacher who lives in Fukuoka City about 100km distance from Nagasaki. I know that you aren’t landing in Nagasaki. Are you going to land in another city in Kyusyu? and host a new event?

I was going to consider attending your event cache, but…. I have to say, I’m no good at English, but I’d love to meet other Geocacher.”

That message was the start of what we hope is a long and enduring friendship.

As luck would have it, we were scheduled to visit Hiko-san’s hometown, Fukuoka on April 14^th. We wrote back and told him we would be visiting Fukuoka. His response was “we must have a plan!” Here’s how it unfolded as he guided us on a walking/geocaching tour around his city.

2:00pm – We exited the ship and met Hiko-san at the terminal where we caught a taxi to the center of Fukuoka to sightsee and find geocaches through the pouring rain!

2:45 – Maya-4, a cacher from Germany, living in Fukuoka, joins us

4:00 – Sunitarn, from India, living in Fukuoka, joins us

4:30 – hanon1123, a local Japanese cacher, and azfinch, a traveling American cacher, join us

5:30 – Totally lost, but having a great time, we are guided by hanon1123 to a yakitori restaurant where a reserved table is waiting

5:45 – Hiko-san brings chryslène, a French cacher, currently living in Fukuoka to the restaurant

7:00 – We hold our event under cover (it’s been raining all day) at Hakata Station where we meet LenaFukuoka, a local geocacher (Our evening ends with eight people from five different countries)

7:45 – Return to the ship, soaking wet, but totally enthralled by a wonderful day!

We have been to over 130 geocaching events, large and small, and never have we felt such warmth, kindness, and camaraderie as we felt this day. It was a wonderful multicultural experience that will never be forgotten.

Many thanks to Hiko-san for all the planning he put into this special day for all of us. And, a thank you for all the wonderful caches he’s placed throughout the city; some of the most creative, sneaky caches we’ve ever found anywhere in the world!
